This week OHS has celebrated ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki Āirani,- Cook Islands Language Week.
This was an opportunity to learn, engage and celebrate the taonga of the Cook Islands Māori language and was especially significant, as the Cook Islands celebrates 60 years of self-governance in free association with New Zealand.
The theme for this year, ‘Ātui’tui’ia au ki te raurau a tōku matakeinanga – Connect me to the offerings of my people, was embraced by students who have been enthusiastically sharing their culture with us. Thank you to Ms.Dwane and the 26 students who have been bringing the language and customs to life for us this week. The performances in front of a packed hall were spectacular and enjoyed by the appreciative audience, who enjoyed seeing staff and students on the stage trying to learn dances. The barbecue and bake sale on Thursday raised funds for the drum dance costumes the group wants to make for future cultural events.
Congratulations to everybody who contributed to making this week a success.
