Level 3 Media students have returned from their trip to Wellington inspired by the many successes of New Zealand media companies on the world stage.
Throughout the visit, students gained a deeper understanding of the significance of the media industry to New Zealand’s economy and culture. They learned about the range of career opportunities available in creative industries and saw first-hand the practical applications of their classroom studies.
New Zealand has earned a reputation as a global leader in special effects, filmmaking, and storytelling. The screen industry contributes billions of dollars to the economy and attracts international tourism, with visitors eager to see iconic filming sites. Kiwi creatives such as Jane Campion (The Piano), Taika Waititi, and Sir Peter Jackson have become internationally recognised leaders in film and media. This knowledge was exciting for students who had a clearer understanding of what is possible.
A highlight of the trip was the tour of Wētā Workshop, where students saw how world-class props, costumes, and effects are created. They also enjoyed exploring Te Papa Museum, where Wētā’s artistry brought some of the exhibitions to life. A visit to the historic Embassy Theatre, to view a British comedy screened as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival, reminded students of the central place film and drama hold in New Zealand’s cultural history.
Other highlights included a visit to Victoria University, a ride on the iconic Wellington Cable Car to the Botanical Gardens, and plenty of shared experiences with classmates and teachers. Altogether, this was a trip to remember.
