At OHS, we're proud to celebrate the journeys our students take after they leave us and move on to new pathways.
77% of our Year 13 leavers in 2024 indicated their intention to move into tertiary study. This far exceeds the national average of 60%, as reported by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) in 2023, and shows the strength of our school's approach to future planning.
Breaking down the numbers further:
52% of our students intended to go to university, compared to the national average of just 30%
12% planned to attend a polytechnic (national average: 13%)
Another 12% were heading to a Private Training Organisation (PTO) (national average: 10%)
At OHS, there is an emphasis on ensuring every student has access to all the options available to them after secondary school. They are guided through subject selection, and at Level 3, particularly, are encouraged to focus on attaining the highest secondary qualification, University Entrance, thus keeping the university pathway open for all who may wish to pursue it.
The Careers department’s Future Pathways Programme plays a key role in our success. Throughout the year, they host:
Motivational workshops, trips and inspiring guest speakers
Seminars and information sessions with tertiary providers
Individual meetings with university, polytechnic, and PTO representatives around specific student interests
Hands-on help with applications, programme selection, and scholarship opportunities
These activities help demystify the tertiary education system and give our students the confidence and tools they need to take the next steps. By the time they finish Year 13, they are well informed and well prepared, ready to succeed at the next level, wherever that may be.
