The hāngi has become a much-loved tradition at OHS.
The idea of feeding our school a hāngi to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori was first introduced by our Head Girl, Amber-Keisha Kaluia Hampton-Toko-Mikahere. It is inspiring to see her vision of bringing people together in manaakitanga come to life once again.
The hāngi itself was delicious and warmly received by students and staff alike, who were drawn by the mouthwatering aromas of chicken, lamb, and vegetables cooked to perfection and shared with the entire school.
An event of this scale requires enormous planning and preparation, and it simply would not be possible without the expertise and generosity of so many. We are very grateful to everyone who contributed to making this day so special for our school community.
Ngā mihi to Ngā Reo Rau o te Haerenga, our Māori committee, and in particular to Rebecca Meade, Owen Sinclair, and our dedicated volunteers, Wane Warehau, Cyril Belk, Matua Anthony Keung, Dave McKee, and the whānau class for providing this experience for us. Thank you also to all those who so generously donated food.
