When Joe Milne, 10 Va attended the Junior Robotics Scrimmage in Tauranga at the weekend, he expected to be competing with his fellow OHS team members. However, after finding out that a competitor from another school had no teammates, he generously offered to step in and form a new alliance. OHS had a full contingent; Leo, on the other hand, needed help.
The challenge for this scrimmage required teams to create and develop code for a robot that had to pick up pens and stack them in a central goal. Joe found that Leo’s robot had a completely different movement system from the one developed by his OHS team. Joe had to learn quickly and adjust to this new system. Joe thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, even more so as he and his new team buddy won first place! The OHS team placed very creditably fourth.
Joe said, “I loved it. It was tons of fun, working as a team to create something, see it work, control it and refine it.”
A bonus for his generosity is that Joe can bring back to his OHS team new ideas and a new perspective for their next scrimmage.
