Chryss Viliko’s journey from Onehunga High School to the Black Ferns has reached another highlight with her role in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final victory over South Africa.
Former Onehunga High School student Chryss Viliko (Y13 class of 2018, Nieukerke Memorial Scholarship winner) continues to shine on the international stage, playing as the starting loosehead prop in the Black Ferns’ Rugby World Cup quarter-final against South Africa.
The match, played in Exeter on Saturday 13 September, saw New Zealand defeat the Springbok Women 46–17, securing a place in the semi-finals. It was Viliko’s 15th appearance in the black jersey since her debut in 2023.
Chryss’s rugby journey began here at Onehunga High School, where she first played under the guidance of her father. From those beginnings she progressed through Marist and Auckland Storm (Farah Palmer Cup), earning recognition for her powerful play and determination. Her rise has been rapid: winning titles with Auckland, claiming the Super Rugby Aupiki crown with the Blues in 2024, and establishing herself as Black Fern #254.
We are very proud to see Chryss representing Onehunga High School on the international stage, inspiring current students with her example of talent, resilience and commitment. With the semi-final now ahead, she is expected to once again be part of the Black Ferns line-up as they chase another World Cup title.
