Cleo Milne 11Kn is a remarkable young woman, focused, driven, and determined to achieve her best.
Recently, Cleo entered two Play it Strange competitions, where musical compositions were judged by distinguished New Zealand musicians. In both categories she entered, the Junior Songwriting Competition (for students in Years 9–11) and the Peace Song Competition (open to all year levels), Cleo was named a finalist. Her reward was two days in a professional production studio, working alongside some of New Zealand’s leading music producers.
For the competition, Cleo submitted both a recording and a lyric sheet, with entries judged on the quality of instrumentation and lyrics. Showcasing her impressive versatility, she composed, sang, played guitar, bass guitar, and keyboard, and even programmed the drum sequences herself. Year 9 student, Daniel Jackson 9Va, supported her by recording one of the drum parts. On top of this, Cleo mastered music production software to ensure her pieces reached a professional standard. She is not only incredibly talented but also deeply committed, currently practicing up to seven hours a day on bass guitar.
Looking ahead, Cleo hopes to study Jazz Composition at the University of Auckland’s School of Music and dreams of pursuing a recording career. Whatever path she chooses, her passion, dedication, and relentless drive will no doubt lead her to great success.
Congratulations Cleo, you are an inspiration and we could not be prouder of you.
