The government has introduced the Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) Programme, which all schools must implement in 2026 to strengthen student attendance and ensure every day of learning counts.
In 2026, Onehunga High School will introduce the Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) Programme, a new government initiative that all schools across New Zealand are required to implement. The programme is part of a nationwide strategy to improve student attendance, with the government aiming for 80 percent of students to be regularly attending school by 2030.
Regular attendance is defined as being at school more than 90 percent of the time, which means missing no more than one day every two weeks. Research shows that students who attend regularly are more likely to achieve their academic goals, stay connected with their peers and teachers, and build the confidence needed for future success.
The STAR Programme provides a clear and consistent process for how schools respond to attendance. It ensures early identification of concerns and a stepped approach to support students and whānau. At Onehunga High School, this will involve teachers, Deans and the Senior Leadership Team working closely with families to address the reasons behind absences and put practical supports in place where needed.
We will continue to recognise and celebrate excellent attendance through assemblies, newsletters and class rewards, while offering support and encouragement to students who need help getting back to regular attendance.
Attendance is a shared responsibility between students, whānau and school. Through the STAR Programme, we will work together to make sure every day of learning counts.
