Each year, we recognise outstanding teaching through the Fran Compton Teachers Awards.
These awards were established by Andrew Grant, a distinguished alumnus of Onehunga High School. Each award carries a $2,500 prize and celebrates teachers whose pedagogical practice exemplifies excellence, innovation, and dedication to student success.
The first recipient of the Outstanding Pedagogical Practice Award is Ms. Karen Coleman. Ms. Coleman is known for her meticulous lesson planning and unwavering commitment to student success. She brings out the best in every learner, creating a classroom environment where students thrive and achieve at the highest levels. Beyond her classroom, she has made an exceptional contribution to the Teaching and Learning Group and is a highly effective professional learning group facilitator, supporting her colleagues to continue growing in their practice. And, of course, she is an absolute powerhouse in the kitchens!
The second recipient of the Outstanding Pedagogical Practice Award is Ms. Shelley Plowman. Ms. Plowman has created a classroom filled with curiosity and engagement. She has gone above and beyond for her students, fostering an enthusiasm for learning, building confidence, and making a real difference through her care and commitment. Her classroom displays reflect her passion for teaching, and her efforts to upskill and share her knowledge of mātauranga Māori have empowered students to learn within and through their own cultures. She also gives countless hours to activities like the Enviro Club and debating, strengthening relationships that enhance her teaching practice.
