Year 9 Art students have completed a significant body of work, culminating in some impressive papier-mâché and expanding foam sculptures.
Students began the unit by researching to learn about coral and the sea life found in the waters of the Pacific. They first drew concept drawings, then, using expanding foam, they used their newfound knowledge to create models of coral that they then painted.
For the next phase of work, each student chose one of six creatures: sharks, whales, rays, or turtles to create papier-mâché sculptures. After conceptualising and drawing their designs, they used cardboard models to build up their sculptures, which, once dried, they then painted with Pasifika designs or designs from their own cultures.
The students thoroughly enjoyed this unit of work, as is evident in the quality of the art they produced. The resulting sculptures are impressive and cannot be truly appreciated in a photograph.
