Students began their high school journey with a welcoming programme that focused on connection, confidence, and readiness for learning.
On Thursday 29 January, our new students spent a positive and welcoming first day beginning with a pōwhiri led by Kaumātua Tu Haru in the Onehunga High School Gymnasium. Following this, whānau were invited to morning tea hosted by our OHS Kapa Haka performers, providing an opportunity to connect with one another and meet members of the OHS Senior Leadership Team.
During her welcome, the Principal Ms. Hayat acknowledged the significance of this milestone for both students and families and spoke about the shared responsibility we hold in supporting each young person’s journey. She reinforced that Onehunga High School is a values driven community grounded in respect, resilience, integrity, and excellence. A clear message was shared about the importance of showing up every day, with attendance identified as the foundation for learning, connection, and success at high school. Whānau were thanked for their trust and assured that strong partnerships between home and school, alongside regular attendance, are central to positive student outcomes.
Kaitiaki teachers then guided students on a tour of the school before they met with their new classes for inductions covering timetables, coursework, and key school expectations. In the afternoon, our Year 13 Peer Support team, Te Aka Tautoko Ākonga, led engaging icebreaker activities designed to support a smooth transition into secondary school. This programme helps new students build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging during their first weeks at high school.
Our junior students headed home feeling comfortable in their new environment and confident that there is always someone they can turn to for support.
