Business Studies student Keeley Le'avasa Demonstrates Entrepreneurial Spirit

OHS Year 12 Business Studies student Keeley Le'avasa combines entrepreneurial spirit and a strong love of her community.

Her visits to local markets with her family as a young child were the happiest times, and at age seven, she brought her old toys to the local park, set up a display on one of the benches, and sold the lot within minutes, making a total of $7! Transitioning from a park bench to navigating Auckland City Council regulations is no small feat for a Year 12 student!

For Keeley, her Business Studies at OHS has ignited a spark to learn everything she can to experience firsthand the creation of business plans, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, marketing, and community connection. And the practical skills to navigate the rigours of setting up a business.

Keeley began by grounding her dream in research. By studying markets in both New Zealand and Australia, she identified best practices before adapting them for the Mangere locale. Deciding on the Mangere Bridge Memorial Hall as the venue reinforced her goal of making a difference and fostering community togetherness.

She met with Auckland City Council staff to address the realities of mandatory regulations, including street parking, food and health safety, on-site generators, security, and more. Then she dived into the fun stuff of marketing, coming up with the name, creating a website, and crafting a call-to-action message for potential local vendors.

Keely intentionally selected stallholders able produce a variety of food and goods, focusing on quality over quantity. Creating a "flow" for visitors was important to avoid an overwhelming, overcrowded space.

The Market Patch launched on the evening of Waitangi Day, and locals turned up in droves. The feedback was very positive; the talented busker played into the evening as a relaxed vibe descended. Keeley took a moment to reflect on the day and to ponder all the ideas for improvement that had popped into her head amid the busy time of keeping things running. She plans to create special-themed fun, e.g., Valentine's Day, Easter, Matariki, and more. We’re proud of your entrepreneurial spirit, and hands-on work ethic Keeley and wish you all the best.
