Despite a team made up of mostly Year 11s OHS faced off against seasoned Year 13 veterans from Kelston Boys High School.
The leap into Senior Grade cricket is no small feat, but the Onehunga High School squad proved this weekend that they aren't just here to participate—they’re here to compete! Despite a team made up of mostly Year 11s OHS faced off against seasoned Year 13 veterans from Kelston Boys High School.
Under grey skies and a chilly wind, Kelston wasted no time asserting themselves, utilising powerful hitting to navigate the blustery conditions, posting a formidable 156/3 after their 20 overs.
While the Kelston bats were firing, Asher Tebbutt, bowling off-spin, remained a constant threat with his crucial breakthroughs with the ball. His discipline was rewarded when he snared two of the three wickets, keeping OHS within striking distance before the momentum threatened to shift entirely toward the visitors.
The OHS reply started with intent, but the step up in grade was evident as wickets fell at regular intervals. The pressure of the scoreboard began to mount, and when the ninth wicket fell in the 15th over with the score at 97/9, a loss seemed inevitable.
What followed was a masterclass in tail-end resilience. Aidan Grant and Zac King came together for a last wicket stand that silenced the doubters.
Aidan Grant made it all come together, finishing with a brilliant 66*, with Zac King providing the support needed to navigate the final overs, ending the game in a win!
OHS kicked off the 2026 season with a touch of late-in-the-game magic!
