Prefect Leadership: A Night to Formally Acknowledge Our Student Leaders

Prefect Leadership: A Night to Formally Acknowledge Our Student Leaders

Families and staff came together to celebrate the 2026 prefects as they embrace their leadership responsibilities.

The 2026 Prefect Evening provided a meaningful opportunity to acknowledge the students for earning their positions and the support that has helped them reach this milestone. Principal Ms Hayat highlighted the important role of parents and whānau in guiding these young leaders, noting that the values they have learned have shaped their character and leadership. She emphasised that the achievements of the prefects reflect a strong partnership between school and home, and that the qualities they bring to their roles will influence the culture and climate of the school community.

A key theme of the evening was the unity of the new cohort. Deputy Principal Ms Bellis spoke with pride about how the group bonded and collaborated during their recent leadership camp, describing how they supported one another and built a strong sense of teamwork. She emphasised that leadership at Onehunga High School is shown through service, influence, and care for others, rather than authority. Prefects were reminded that they play an important role in setting the tone for the school community, acting as role models, and creating an environment where every student feels supported, encouraged, and able to succeed.

Head Prefects Tali Feu’u and Lydia MacDonald shared reflections on their own leadership journeys, speaking openly about the growth, responsibility, and commitment required for their positions. They acknowledged the guidance and encouragement they have received from their families and committed to leading with integrity, honesty, and purpose. Their speeches highlighted the importance of supporting their team, acting with fairness, and embodying the school’s values in all they do.

The evening was a celebration of connection, pride, and achievement. Prefects were recognisedfor their leadership roles and also for the personal qualities that have earned them this responsibility. The discussions and speeches reinforced that leadership is about service, setting a positive example, and caring for others within the school community.

The evening concluded with a sense of pride in the students’ achievements and confidence in the leadership they will provide throughout the year.
