Empowering every student to excel in Mathematics through enrichment, competition, and accelerated pathways.
At OHS, we recognise that our classrooms are full of talented mathematicians, and we are committed to ensuring every student is both challenged and supported to reach their full potential. We provide a range of opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, allowing students to deepen their understanding, build confidence, and showcase their skills in meaningful ways.
One key aspect of this is our strong focus on enrichment. Students have the opportunity to test themselves against others at both national and international levels through a variety of prestigious competitions. These include the University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition, which begins on March 25 with a second round on May 6, and the Australian Mathematics Competition on Wednesday, August 5. For our junior students, Mathex offers a high energy, team based experience, often described as maths meets athletics, while senior students can challenge themselves in the NZAMT Senior Mathematics Competition. In addition, we are planning university visits for our junior mathematicians, helping them explore future study and career pathways and see where their mathematical talents can take them.
Alongside enrichment opportunities, OHS provides clear and supportive academic pathways to ensure success for all learners. We believe that building strong foundations early is essential, which is why all Year 10 students, along with some Year 9 students, attempt the Numeracy CAA to meet NCEA requirements ahead of time. Our Year 10 programme also includes an NCEA Level 1 Achievement Standard, giving students valuable experience and preparation for the demands of senior study.
For students who are ready to move at a faster pace, we offer a structured Scholarship pathway designed to extend and challenge high achievers. In Years 9 and 10, enrichment classes allow students to work a full year ahead of their peers. As they progress, high performing Year 11 students may be accelerated directly into Year 12 classes. This pathway culminates in Year 13, where students can pursue Scholarship Calculus and Statistics, the highest levels of achievement available in secondary school mathematics.
At OHS, our aim is to unlock the mathematical potential in every student, whether they are building confidence or striving for Scholarship success. Through a combination of enrichment, academic preparation, and acceleration opportunities, we ensure that every learner has the support and challenge they need to thrive.
