Students carry out fieldwork at North Head to explore ecological patterns in a real world setting.
From starfish and snails to seaweeds and whelks, Level 2 Biology students encountered a wide range of species during their recent field trip to North Head, Devonport.
On Wednesday 29 April, eighty five students took part in the trip to carry out fieldwork as part of their internal assessment. Working in a coastal environment, they planned and conducted their own investigations, collecting data to test their hypothesis around ecological zonation on the rocky shore.
Students explored how different species are distributed across the shoreline and how environmental factors influence these patterns. The experience provided a valuable opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real world context while developing practical investigation skills.
The continued growth of Biology in the senior school is supported by strong academic results, reflecting high levels of engagement and achievement in Science at OHS.
