OHS marked Samoan Language Week with a meaningful Ava Ceremony, celebrating culture, student leadership, and community connection.
Today, a group of OHS students and staff gathered to mark the beginning of Samoan Language Week with a special Ava Ceremony held at school. The Ava Ceremony is an important tradition in Samoan culture and is used to formally open significant events. It set a respectful and meaningful tone for the week, while also recognising the importance of celebrating Samoan language and identity within our school.
Led by Mr. Sam Crichton and Mr. Sam Moli, the ceremony provided a chance for students to share an important part of their culture with others in a way that felt authentic and meaningful. For those involved, it was a proud moment to see students step forward and represent their heritage. After the ceremony, koko laisa (cocoa rice), panikeke (sweet bread), and other treats were shared. It was a significant start to Samoan Language Week, bringing people together, celebrating culture, and supporting our students.
Celebrate Samoa Language Week: 31 May - 6 June 2026
The 2026 theme for Samoa Language Week is "‘E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le 'nu'u - From the high mountains are the blessings of the village."
