An authentic industry experience provided students with valuable insight into the vital role of freight, logistics and biosecurity in New Zealand's economy, while exploring a range of future career pathways.
Four of our Year 13 students recently participated in an industry visit to Auckland Airport to learn more about careers in freight, logistics and biosecurity.cThe day began at the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), where students met detector dog teams, toured inspection and containment facilities, and learned about the role of biosecurity officers in protecting New Zealand's borders. They also explored the range of career opportunities within MPI, including quarantine inspection, laboratory science, intelligence and border operations.
Students then visited the Farmers Distribution Centre, where they gained an understanding of the logistics involved in moving products from overseas manufacturers to retail stores throughout New Zealand. The visit also highlighted the technology used within a modern distribution centre and introduced students to careers in logistics coordination and freight forwarding. Reflecting on the experience, Year 13 student Dellos Kaliatama said, "Seeing all the steps for a single men's jumper to travel from Bangladesh to Sylvia Park opened my eyes to how massive this logistics industry is." He also commented on the technology used throughout the distribution centre and the career opportunities available within the industry.
We thank the Ministry for Primary Industries, Rocket Freight, Farmers and Rhenus Logistics for providing such an engaging and informative experience. Opportunities like these help students make informed decisions about future study and career pathways by connecting them with industry professionals and workplace environments.
