Distinguished Alumni Honoured at Onehunga High School

Distinguished Alumni Honoured at Onehunga High School

Mary Hill and Trevor Reekie returned to Onehunga High School last night as the newest inductees into the school's Distinguished Alumni programme.

The Onehunga High School community gathered on Tuesday evening for the annual Distinguished Alumni Induction Ceremony, a special event celebrating the achievements of former students who have made significant contributions in their chosen fields. Among those attending were members of the Board of Trustees, Honourable Greg Fleming, past and present staff, prefect leaders, alumni, whānau and supporters of the school.

In her address, Principal Shameen Hayat spoke about the importance of recognising former students whose achievements have brought distinction to themselves, their communities and Onehunga High School. She reminded guests that while students may leave the school gates, they remain part of the school's story and encouraged current students to see themselves as the alumni of the future.

This year's inductees were Mary Hill, who attended Onehunga High School from 1989 to 1993, and Trevor Reekie, who attended from 1965 to 1968. Both were formally inducted into the Distinguished Alumni programme in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions. The evening provided an opportunity to hear directly from the inductees. Mary spoke about her journey into law and her work as one of New Zealand's leading environmental and infrastructure lawyers.

Trevor shared stories from his distinguished career in the music industry, reflecting on the people, opportunities and experiences that shaped his work as a musician, producer, writer and record label owner. Their presentations gave guests an insight into the paths they had taken since leaving Onehunga High School and reinforced the many different ways success can be achieved.

The evening was supported by the Alumni Committee, who identified and recommended this year's inductees. Special thanks also go to school archivist John Pople, whose research and dedication helped bring the stories of both inductees to life.

Guests also enjoyed an exceptional meal prepared and served by the school's Hospitality and Catering students. The quality of the food and the professionalism of the service were outstanding, with students representing the school with pride throughout the evening. Guests were also treated to a musical performance by Year 12 student Cleo Milne, whose contribution added to the atmosphere and helped make the evening a memorable occasion.

Onehunga High School congratulates Mary Hill and Trevor Reekie on their well-deserved induction and thanks everyone who attended and supported the event. It was a memorable evening celebrating achievement, connection and the enduring relationship between Onehunga High School and its alumni.
