Former Head Student, football captain and entrepreneur Maro Bonsu-Maro is inspiring the next generation through his international success and generous support of Onehunga High School.

When Maro Bonsu-Maro (pictured middle of football images) walked through our gates, he was driven by two passions: football and business. Today, he’s turned those passions into an incredible international career!

During his time at OHS, Maro was a Prefect, First XI Football Captain, and a standout in the Business School. He has played football for local Auckland clubs such as Papatoetoe AFC, Central United, Auckland City Youth, and Auckland City FC. After graduating, he completed a Bachelor of Business at AUT, played professional football in Sweden and Switzerland, and launched Best Grip in 2020. What started as an idea in a South Auckland garage is now worn by over 10,000 athletes worldwide, including pros in the All Blacks, All Whites, Auckland FC, NRL, AFL, A-League, and the English Premier League! Maro is continuing his football career, playing in Melbourne, Australia. 

Maro has not forgotten where his journey started. We want to extend a massive thank you to Maro and Best Grip for his generous support of our current OHS athletes, helping supply performance grip socks to both our First XI Girls Football and Junior First XI Football teams ahead of their tournament weeks! Seeing an alumnus succeed and want to give back to their old school is awesome and we hope it inspires our current students to see the incredible possibilities out there for their own futures.

Maro credits much of his foundation to his time at school, fondly remembering his own tournament week trips with the First XI and Miss Weightman’s business classes. Currently playing football in Melbourne while expanding his business into Australia, the US, and the UK, Maro offers these inspiring words to current OHS students: "You don't need to have everything figured out. Start with what you've got, stay curious, and don't be afraid to fail. Every setback teaches you something. Looking back, football taught me discipline, OHS gave me pride (LAC!), and business taught me resilience. Together they've opened doors I never imagined possible."
